The Porto–Barca d'Alva–Porto Cruise is, simply put, the most complete cruise on the Douro River departing from Porto. In 17 hours, you travel the Douro from start to finish — from Campanhã Station all the way to Barca d'Alva, on the border with Spain — passing through 3 impressive dams, with full meals on board and return to Porto at the end of the day. For those who want to experience the Douro in its entirety, in a single day, this is the ultimate programme.
Most Douro cruises cover a section of the river. This programme covers everything. Departing at 06h45 from Campanhã Station, the coach takes passengers to Régua, where they board for an upstream boat journey through the Upper Douro all the way to Barca d'Alva — the easternmost point of the Douro in Portugal, right on the Spanish border. Over 200 km of river, landscape and history, with the return to Porto expected at 23h25.
The programme operates at weekends between April and mid-October.
The upstream Douro boat journey includes passing through three of the river's largest dams:
Bagaúste Dam — a 28-metre drop, shortly after Régua. The first of three and a clear indication of the grandeur of what lies ahead.
Valeira Dam — a 32.5-metre drop, the most spectacular on the route. This is where the Port wine aperitif is served — one of the most iconic images of any Upper Douro cruise.
Pocinho Dam — a 22-metre drop, the last before Barca d'Alva. At this point the Douro is narrower, wilder, quieter — the Douro that few people know.
With 17 hours of travel, the on-board catering accompanies the entire journey:
If you have any dietary restrictions, simply indicate this at the time of booking.
Midway through the journey, the boat passes through Pinhão — the most emblematic village of the Douro Wine Region, surrounded by historic estates on terraced hillsides. A stop that is, in itself, one of the most recognised images of the Douro in the world.
Arriving at Barca d'Alva at 17h30 means reaching the limit of the Douro in Portuguese territory. A small schist and vine village nestled by the river, where the border with Spain is the horizon. Few tourists arrive here by boat — it is a privilege reserved for those who make this journey.
After a brief stop, the return to Porto is made by coach — with the possibility of being replaced by train — with expected arrival in Porto at 23h25.
The Porto–Barca d'Alva–Porto Cruise operates at weekends only and places sell out quickly. If you want to experience the longest and most complete cruise on the Douro departing from Porto, don't leave it for tomorrow.
